My journey in Timor...day 3

We left for Maliana (village experience!!) at ard 8am (ET time). It's abt 4-5 hrs drive away from Dili. We stopped by Balibo to drop a team there and also for toilet break.

The deep blue sea...

Balibo flag house aka Australian flag house

We learnt about the story behind this house, not sure you guys heard of the "Balibo five". 5 Australian-based newsmen (Greg Shackleton,Tony Stewart, Britons Malcolm Rennie, Brian Peters and Gary Cunningham) were slained by the Indonesian on Oct 16, 1975. The 5 men spent their final days in this house before they were shot dead as they filmed invading Indonesian forces attacking Balibo.
A 6th journalist, Roger East who was also killed by the Indonesians while reporting the deaths of his 5 colleagues. The Indonesian invasion marked the beginning of the country's brutal, 24-year occupation of East Timor in which more than 200,000 people killed.

The violence peaked in 1999 when the Indonesian military and its proxy militias launched a wave of attacks on supporters of the country's independence killing 1,500 and laying waste to the half-island. U.N. troops finally restored order and East Timor gained full independence in May 2001 after a short period of transitional rule.

The dilapidated home, restored with Victorian government funding and support from the construction giant Multiplex, will also be used as a community center for local Timorese.

The house dedicated to the 5 brave journalists...

It was pouring very heavily when we reached Maliana. We were immediately swarmed around by the kids.

People here literally living in darkness...

Where we stayed...

As we are in the valley, it was unusually hot in the day...but praise God, He sent rain to cool down the land.
